How to Clean and Balance a Ceiling Fan: Step by Step

1. Turn the fan off and let it stop completely. Never clean a moving fan. Wait until the blades are fully still before you climb up.
2. Dust each blade with a pillowcase. Slip an old pillowcase over one blade at a time and pull it back toward you. The dust collects inside the case instead of raining down on your floor and furniture — the single best trick for a mess-free job.
3. Wipe the blades clean. Follow up with a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with mild cleaner to lift the sticky film that dust leaves behind. Dry each blade fully, since damp blades attract dust faster and can warp over time.
4. Tighten everything you can reach. With the fan off, check the screws that hold the blades to the brackets, the brackets to the motor, and the mounting bracket to the ceiling. Loose hardware is the number-one cause of wobble, and often a few turns of a screwdriver fixes the shake entirely.
5. Check that the blades are even. Measure from the tip of one blade straight up to the ceiling, then check every other blade at the same point. They should all be the same distance. If one droops lower, gently bend the bracket back into line — a warped blade throws the whole fan off.
6. Find the wobbly blade. Turn the fan back on at low speed and watch. To pinpoint the culprit, clip the balancing weight (or tape a coin) to the top of one blade at a time and see which placement smooths out the wobble.
7. Add the balancing weight. Once you've found the blade that calms the shake, slide the clip to different spots along it until the fan runs steady, then stick the adhesive weight there permanently. Run the fan on high to confirm it's smooth at every speed.
