How to Clean a BBQ Grill (Grates, Burners and Grease Tray)

A clean gas grill heats evenly, flares up less and lasts years longer. Here's the step-by-step deep clean for grates, burners, flavorizer bars and the grease tray.

In San Diego, grilling season is basically all year. That's great for dinner, and hard on the grill. If yours has started flaring up, heating unevenly or taking forever to get hot, it's probably overdue for a real cleaning.

Scraping the grates before you cook is a good habit, but it only handles the surface. Underneath, grease and carbon build up on the burners, heat shields and grease tray. That's what causes flare-ups and, occasionally, grease fires.

Why It Matters

A clean grill heats evenly, so your food cooks the way you expect. Clean burner ports mean a steady blue flame instead of a weak, yellow one. Most importantly, a grease tray that hasn't been emptied in a year is a real fire hazard, especially on a hot, dry Santa Ana afternoon.

Regular cleaning also stops rust from eating through the burners and grates, which are the parts that usually fail first.

What You'll Need

A bristle-free grill brush or scraper, a bucket of warm water with dish soap, a putty knife or plastic scraper, a stiff nylon brush, a shop vac (optional), aluminum foil and gloves.

How to Deep Clean a Gas Grill: Step by Step

  1. Burn it off. Close the lid and run the grill on high for 15 minutes to carbonize stuck-on food. Then turn it off, shut the propane tank valve or gas supply and let it cool until it's warm but safe to touch.
  2. Scrub and soak the grates. Brush the grates while they're still warm, then pull them out and soak them in hot soapy water for 20–30 minutes. Scrub with the nylon brush and rinse. We recommend bristle-free brushes, since loose wire bristles can end up in food.
  3. Clean the flavorizer bars or heat shields. These are the metal tents over the burners. Scrape off the crusty buildup with the putty knife and wash them in the same soapy water.
  4. Clean the burners. With the grates and bars out, brush the burner tubes gently lengthwise to clear the small gas ports. A clogged port shows up as a gap in the flame. Don't widen the holes or use water inside the tubes.
  5. Scrape out the firebox. Push all the loose debris from the bottom of the cook box down into the grease tray opening. A shop vac makes this faster.
  6. Empty and clean the grease tray. Slide out the tray and drip cup, scrape the grease into the trash (not down a drain), and wash them. Lining the cup with foil makes next time easier.
  7. Check the gas line. Brush soapy water on the hose and connections, then open the tank valve. Bubbles mean a leak. If you see any, close the valve and replace the hose or regulator before using the grill again.
  8. Reassemble and fire it up. Put everything back, light the grill and let it run for 10 minutes to burn off any soap residue.

How Often Should You Do This?

Brush the grates every time you cook. Do a deep clean every three months if you grill weekly, or at least twice a year if it's more occasional. Wipe the outside and keep it covered between uses, since coastal air is tough on metal, even inland in Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights (92130).

While You're at It

Look at where the grill lives. Keep it at least a few feet from the house, fences and overhanging branches. If it sits on a wood deck, our guide on resealing a wood deck is worth a read, since grease stains soak into unsealed wood fast.
