How to Power Wash a Patio Without Damaging It

If your patio has gone from light gray to a patchy, darker shade of dirt, you're not alone. Between dust, pollen, BBQ grease, tire marks and the occasional drip from the planters, outdoor concrete and pavers get grimy fast.

A pressure washer can make a patio look almost new in an afternoon. It can also etch concrete, blast the sand out of paver joints and chip the edges if you use the wrong nozzle. Here's how to do it right.

Why It Matters

Beyond looking better, a clean patio is safer. Algae and grime make surfaces slippery, especially in shady spots and near sprinklers. Regular cleaning also keeps stains from setting in and lets you spot cracks, sinking pavers and trip hazards early.

In San Diego, where the patio is basically an extra room for most of the year, keeping it clean makes a real difference in how much you enjoy your home.

What You'll Need

A pressure washer (an electric model around 1,500–2,500 PSI is plenty for most patios), a 25-degree nozzle and a 40-degree nozzle, a surface cleaner attachment (optional but very helpful), a stiff broom, concrete cleaner or degreaser for oil spots, safety glasses and closed-toe shoes. For pavers, polymeric joint sand.

How to Power Wash a Patio: Step by Step

1. Clear and sweep. Move furniture, planters and the grill. Sweep away leaves and loose dirt so you're not just pushing mud around.
2. Protect the surroundings. Close nearby windows, cover outlets and light fixtures, and move anything fragile. Stucco walls and window screens are easy to damage with direct spray.
3. Pre-treat stains. Apply degreaser to grease and oil spots and let it sit per the directions. Scrub stubborn spots with a stiff brush.
4. Start with the widest nozzle. Begin with the 40-degree (white) nozzle and switch to 25-degree (green) only if you need more power. Never use the 0-degree red tip on a patio. It will carve lines into concrete.
5. Test a hidden spot. Try a corner first to make sure you're not etching the surface.
6. Keep a steady distance and overlap. Hold the wand 8–12 inches from the surface and use smooth, overlapping sweeps in one direction. Stopping in one spot leaves swirl marks. A surface cleaner attachment gives the most even results.
7. Rinse toward a planter or lawn. Work from the house outward so dirty water flows away from your foundation. Don't wash soapy water or debris into the street; storm drains in San Diego flow straight to creeks and the ocean.
8. Re-sand pavers. If you have pavers, some joint sand will wash out. Once the patio is fully dry, sweep in polymeric sand and mist it lightly so it sets.

How Often Should You Do This?

Once a year for most patios. Shady or heavily used areas, or spots near sprinklers that grow algae, may need it twice a year.

While You're at It

With the patio clear, check for cracks, uneven pavers or low spots where water pools. If you have a wood deck or fence nearby, don't use high pressure on it.
